Today’s Talking Tip Tuesday comes from our stuttering expert and all-around great SLP, Patrick!

🗣Parents often ask why their children began to stutter. While there is no single “cause,” we can definitely say that it was nothing parents did (or didn’t do).

❤️ You can help a child who stutters by giving them time to talk. Just wait and listen. Don’t try to give them tips to “say it better” – they are doing their best. Many young children who begin stuttering, recover (stop) on their own. But if they don’t there are treatments available to help them reduce or manage stuttering. Contact us to learn more!

This week’s Feeding Friday tip comes from Stacy! 🤩

🌎 When working with kids who avoid new foods, I often use a strategy I call "Around the World." I help the kiddo place both preferred and non-preferred foods in a circle around the plate, generally in pieces similar in size. I position "non-preferred" or new foods in between "easy" or familiar foods to avoid refusals and to provide a "safe food" bite after a bite of something not-so-easy to eat.

🍽 I always allow the child to determine where to start and in which direction they will travel - this gives them some power and control over the practice and lessens anxiety. Kids love to name what the foods represent.

🏔 Some kids like to have the foods represent countries, while others assign foods a topographical attribute - rice might be sand on the beach, meatloaf might be a mountain range, and blueberries might be the ocean.

🧑‍🚀 This little guy made his Around the World foods a solar system. It's way more fun to eat Pluto than just a plain old tater tot!

✨Bringing creativity and levity to eating is a good way to make difficult tasks a little bit easier. Remember that anxiety decreases appetite so we keep it as light as possible while still targeting those goals!

This week’s Feeding Tip comes from Stacy! 👑

⭐️ "Quick meltable" foods such as puffs and stars are just that, foods that melt quickly in the mouth. Because they dissolve so easily, they are great to use when getting your little one acclimated to more solid finger foods.

✨Once babies can sit up with some independence, they begin to gain more control over their jaw and tongue movements. The back and forth pattern seen when sucking from the breast or bottle is slowly replaced with more side-to-side tongue movements that are necessary for moving food to the gums for early "chewing."

💫It is not uncommon for your little to experience some gagging during this transition process. Quick meltables are way less scary (for baby and mama) because they turn into a smooshy puree-like texture before your eyes with very little effort.

🌟Pro-Tip: Go for the Gerber brand over the fancier varieties, they were developed with the help of a feeding specialist and dissolve quick!

🗣 My favorite part of my job is collaborating with families to help their child be a stronger communicator and sharing in the joy of their successes.

✨If I have 30 minutes of time, I try to slow down and take a breath. It’s been a stressful year and any time I can take to reflect, listen, and be still, I try to really appreciate.

🍽 My favorite food as a child (and still as an adult) is mashed potatoes. When they’re done right, they’re perfect.
